yaa..it is...background radiations are those which are present around us but don't cause any harm because they are below the permissible safety limit.

but...the term geiger counter isn't there in any of the buks...and there is no mention of measuring rate of emission...so need to study it...and go tell ur teacher abt this and get it confirmed..

THE FIGURE SHOWS A GEIGER COUNTER.

A Geiger counter, also called a Geiger-Müller counter, is a type of particle detector that measures ionizing radiation.

It consists of a metal cylinder and a metallic wire along its axis.the cylinder contains argon gas with traces of chlorine at a pressure b/w 50 to 100 mm of mercury.a p.d.,slightly less than that necessary to produce discharge in the gas is maintained b/w the wire and the cylinder.

Alpha particles(or for that matter,any particles to be studied) can enter through thin glass or mica window. the particles entering the counter produce ionization of the gas molecules.The ions so produced are accelerated by the electric field b/w the wire and cylinder and produce more ions,by collisions,causing ionisation current to build up rapidly.

The current,however,decays rapidly since the circuit has a very small time constant.Thus,there is a momentary surge of current,or momentary surge of poterntial across external resistance connectedin the circuit. the electric surge is either amplified to advance an electronic counter, or to activate the counting rate meter.Thus,more the number of charged particles from a radiative source enter the cylinder,more is the count rate.

Background Radiation: It has been observed that when no radioactive source is around at a given place, the Geiger counter always records some charged particles.These particles are coming from (i)radioactive substances present in the earth (ii)cosmic ray particles which are coming from all directions from cosmos. this is background radiation.

NOTE: While using the counter for recording the rate of emission of the particles from some radioactive source,always record the background radiation of the given place in first instance.After recording the count rate of given radioactive source, subtract the background radiation,so as to have an accurate count rate.
