How do you deep clean a sink drain?

There is a mildew smell every time I run the water in my bathroom sink. I've tried pouring bleach down the drain *and* the overflow hole but it makes no difference. I've had conflicting advice about cleaning it out. Is there anything I can pour down there that will "bubble up" and clean everywhere? Are there any plumbers out there who can advise me? Thank you very much.

I was advised to use caustic soda to deep clean my sink. may be you could try it too.
