| Nerve Impulses travel in one direction This is due to the refractory period i.e. Na+ channels are open or recovering. The refractory period allows the voltage sensitive ion channels to restore their original polarity Absolute refractory period - Na+ channels are open or recovering Relative refractory period - Occurs when the membrane is hyperpolarised (-80mV), where the K+ channels are open. Action potentials are more difficult to generate during this period relative to resting potential (-70mV)
